| News: Unprofessional helmet diving operators |
|
| |
 |
|
You will no doubt have seen news coverage last weekend of 11 tourists having a serious accident at Grand Bay “whilst participating in an undersea walking excursion”.
Yet once again we are obliged to advise that this accident did not involve us and was in no way connected with our company Undersea Walk Ltd, Grand Baie.
Since successfully pioneering the helmet diving activity in Mauritius in 1989, our company name has become synonymous with the activity of helmet diving, and other operators have blatantly used our company name and even advertising material to promote their own “copy” activities.
However this near fatal incident once again raises an important point specifically that the cheapest operator is rarely the best, and often is actually the worst.
As a professional operator in the tourism industry you understand that operating to international safety standards, employing the full number of properly trained staff to operate safely, choosing the best equipment available with the minimum environment effect and maintaining it in good condition, all has a cost. Yet despite this basic principle, hotel PR staff, boathouses and tour operators are always forgetting guest safety and priority to cheap prices and big commissions.
We are justifiably proud of our 19 years of professional operation as the only helmet diving operators specializing exclusively in this activity and operating for all these 19 years without an accident. This is not luck, only a completely professional operation brings a track record like that.
Conversely the worst operators show a continued record of accidents, hospitalization of clients, boat sinkings, faulty equipment operation and even fatalities, yet amazingly they continue operation and continue to receive clients from hotels and tour operators.
We ask you to pause for a moment and consider what is really in the best interests of your guests and your hotel
The cheapest price, a big commission, or your guests’ safety.

Maroons And Women
First and foremost maroonage was a man’s thing and men were more able to undergo the hardships of maroonage. On the other hand, maroons were more prone to getting stuck or lagging behind with women who might bear children and weaken the chances for survival as a group.
Femininity, on the other hand, was also considered as a physical and mental weakness and led to the conclusion that women slaves would not adapt to wilderness and other hardships associated to maroonage. However, in spite of all these, female maroonage did exist and the reasons why women slaves marooned were many. According to records from Grand maroons, the main reasons remained that they wanted to escape from their masters’ control and also did not want to be associated to maroon bands. |

Towering chimneys
These solitary relics of extinct sugarcane mills could have numbered some 300 around a century ago and now there must be around fifteen of them remaining. There certainly is a long way down to fifteen from 300, but development and natural calamities have had the upper hand. In spite of their solid stone structure, many of them have not been able to resist the fury of cyclonic winds sweeping over the island with great force. Their height has played against them and to believe that these chimneys must have been the first skyscrapers in Mauritius automatically makes those that still exist more appealing.
All of them look the same from a distance but none of these chimneys are identical. On close look, you will find that some have square cross-sections while others are round. Their heights and sizes of stones used in their construction differ. For example, the chimney at Saint Aubin has a partially conic tower which also served as a windmill. That of Albion is made up of small rectangular stones with its top in red bricks. |
